JOHANNESBURG - Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, is officially coming to South Africa.
The company said its first branded stores will open before the end of the year, promising jobs, community investment, and its signature “Everyday Low Prices”.
The move follows a growth summit earlier in 2025, where Walmart recruited African suppliers to put locally made goods on its shelves.
Walmart said shoppers can expect bright, wide aisles packed with everything from groceries to gadgets - all at competitive prices.
The retailer is also pledging to invest in local communities and small businesses, hoping to blend global scale with homegrown flavour.
"This news demonstrates Walmart's commitment to making high-quality, affordable merchandise accessible to more customers. We will announce official opening dates of our store locations in the next few weeks,” said Massmart CEO Miles van Rensburg.
Walmart began as a single discount store in rural Arkansas back in 1962.
Today it’s a global giant in 19 countries and soon, it’ll be rolling out trolleys in South Africa.
