CapeTalk’s Lester Kiewit and political analyst Tara Roos discuss the future of the Economic Freedom fighters (EFF) and the MK party.

Many political analysts feel the EFF has its finger on the pulse of what is wrong with the country, and how many issues are linked to the disgruntled and forgotten youth.
However, in the 2024 general elections the party saw its worst performance ever, raising questions about the future of the radical left in South Africa.
The EFF has since lost a number of notable members, many of whom defected to Jacob Zuma’s MK Party, while leader Julius Malema clings to power.
Despite a rough patch Roos believes the EFF will make a comeback.
“There are enough structures in place, that they have enough young political talent, that the party will outlive Julius Malema.”

On the other hand, she believes the MK Party will splinter in 2029 and has too many internal problems to survive.

On a national level she believes South Africans do gravitate more towards centrist policies, which makes it difficult for parties like EFF and MK to retain support.
