WC Network on Disability deems CoCT's decision to downscale Dial-A-Ride service devastating

CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Network on Disability said the City of Cape Town’s decision to downscale the Dial-A-Ride service is devastating.  

Earlier this week, the city announced that due to budget cuts, it had to scale back on the transport service.  

From 8 September 2025, it will only be available to wheelchair-bound individuals and those with severe walking impairments.  

And eligible users will only be transported from their homes to the workplaces and back.  

The acting treasurer of the network, Anthony Ghillino, said the 2,000 people who will be impacted by this decision cannot afford to use e-hailing services regularly.  

“It’s heartbreaking to hear the stories of our members who aren’t able to get to school, who aren’t able to go grocery shopping, for the city to suggest that e-hailing services are an option, I think it shows a real disconnect between the powers that be and the people on the ground.”
