Wits University has stated it requires more evidence to proceed with its investigation into an alleged rape incident involving a student.
The university’s announcement comes as students began demonstrating on Monday night following news of the alleged sexual assault. The accusation centers on a newly elected student representative council (SRC) member, who is alleged to have raped a fellow student.

The university has confirmed that the suspect has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
Addressing the protesting students earlier on Tuesday, Dean of Student Affairs Jerome September urged them to assist the university by providing more information.
"We're still waiting for the victim or victims to come forward, and I want to ask any student and every student who knows anything to please come forward," September stated.
"We need the evidence, we need the statements, so that we are able to move beyond suspension, right. But we cannot move beyond suspension if we don't have all the evidence."
