JOHANNESBURG - What do you get when you mix an election year, an optimistic and tenacious populace, a nation on the verge of collapse, a great sense of pride in recent accomplishments, and the largest annual assembly of South Africa's funniest people?

The Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards. Obviously.

This event, which will take place on 13 April at the Lyric Theatre in Gold Reef City, promises to be full of awards, sketches, punchlines, and satire. A-list celebrities and past award winners will be among the star-studded lineup.

The 11th edition, with the theme "You Think You Know South Africa," is an awards ceremony masquerading as a comedy show, with the goal of honouring SA's top comedians against the backdrop of our stunning yet unstable nation.

This year's host of the awards presentation, Mpho Popps, said: "Much like our country, our comedy infrastructure was a bit on the edge there for a while, so everyone's had to pull their weight to rebuild the framework of comedy. South Africa is similar in that each of us must contribute in some way to the advancement of our nation."

Joining Mpho on stage to honour the winners of the 12 major award categories are celebrities like Celeste Ntuli, Khanyisa Bunu, and Robby Collins, who will bring the stand-up gold. A hilarious evening filled with pure comic genius will unfold as each winner does a five-minute stand-up routine in lieu of an acceptance speech.

A few weeks after the event, Comedy Central will air a TV special featuring all of the show's highlights.

This is excellent news for 2024 as Comedy Central has become the event's first official television partner.
