Kia Cordeira of the South African Depression and Anxiety Group shares the signs and symptoms of teen depression and how to help.

This year's Teen Suicide Prevention Week runs from 11 February 2024 to 18 February 2024.

Sometimes teenage angst is just that - but sometimes it can be a sign of mental health challenges like depression or anxiety which might lead to suicide without necessary interventions.

As parents or guardians, you want to do your best to help and prevent a tragedy like teen suicide - paying attention to the warning signs of depression is the first step.

How can you identify depression in your teenager?

Cordeira notes these basic behavioural changes:

  • The way they speak changes and becomes "more negative". They may talk about "how things would be if they weren't here".
  • They look extra fatigued and have no energy to do things.
  • There's a drastic change in their sleeping and eating patterns.
  • They isolate themselves and don't go out with friends.
  • Their mood changes to feelings of rage, hopelessness, irritation or tiredness that are often coupled with weight gain or weight loss.

Should you suspect your teen has depression, do these three things...

1) Talk honestly and openly

"The first thing we encourage you to do is talk to your teens. Stay calm and reassure them that you're there to help."

- Kia Cordeira, SADAG

Here are some things you could say...

2) Listen to understand, not to respond

"Listen to understand, not to respond. It's not about what you say but more about holding space for them to share with you."
- Kia Cordeira, SADAG

3) Ask for help and connect your teen with resources to assist them

Cordeira notes that "everyone's situation is different."

She suggests networking with a school counsellor, a GP or a psychologist. If this sounds overwhelming and you don't know what to do, call SADAG 24/7 on 0800 456 789 (toll-free). You can also SMS 31393, and a councillor will call you back.

If you are struggling with depression or anxiety, remember...

"You're never alone and there is always help, there's always hope and we are always here."
- Kia Cordeira, SADAG

You can also connect with SADAG on Saturday (17 February) at their teen suicide prevention workshop for teens, parents and caregivers.
