JOHANNESBURG - A North West Revolutionary Council member who helped to push Supra Mahumapelo out of power quit the African National Congress (ANC), taking up membership with the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).
Themba Gwabeni confirmed to Eyewitness News that he tendered his resignation from the ANC, saying he wanted to join what he called a sober, more dignified solid organisation.
Gwabeni was one of three leaders associated with the hashtag Supra Must Fall campaign that saw the once powerful Mahumapelo resign as premier of the North West.
Mahumapelo is currently suing members of the Revolutionary Council, including Gwabeni.
The IFP’s believed to be on a resurgence in its home province of KwaZulu-Natal.
It's likely that through his influence, the IFP, traditionally stronger in KwaZulu-Natal and areas near hostels in Gauteng, has been campaigning in the platinum-rich province.
Gwabeni explained why he chose to join the IFP, “I find it to be a very solid, sober, dignified, integrity party that has experience.”
The IFP will hold its manifesto launch at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, becoming the third party to do so in 2024.
Activations leading up to the event include a gala dinner and helicopter launch.
