CAPE TOWN - The Gugulethu Community Policing Forum said that efforts by Build One SA (BOSA) leader Mmusi Maimane to pressurise police structures in the area are welcomed.
This comes after Mamaine handed over a memorandum at the police station on Wednesday demanding effective policing in the area.
Gugulethu remains a crime hotpot, particularly for murders and mass shootings.
CPF chairperson Ntandazo Anthony Gcingca said the crime in the area was exacerbated by a lack of development and rampant unemployment.
"We have young people that are ungovernable, we have young people who have already surrendered their lives to the crime. They don't see any success without being a criminal."
Maimane echoed the sentiments, saying a lack of effective policing was a violation of human rights.
"We need a functioning police station, a comprehensive review of policing and ultimately bringing the SAPS down until there's integrated intelligence. Only then can we protect the rights of citizens to safety. Human rights must mean the protection of life and the police are the enablers of that right."
