JOHANNESBURG - A study by the Centre for Social Development in Africa (CSDA) suggests young people are less likely to vote for the African National Congress (ANC) come 29 May.

The centre made public its report on factors influencing voter choice on Tuesday.

The research implies that youth unemployment and the lack of opportunities may sway young people away from the governing ANC.

As political parties make use of social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram to attract the youth’s attention, the CSDA insists young people are likely to distance themselves from the ANC

The lead researcher, Leila Patel said: “They feel less attached to the historical past of the party that brought freedom and democracy.”

She said the study suggests the youth is gravitating towards opposition parties.

“Young people feel they are not included in the political system. They feel a sense of exclusion in society and the economy.”

The youth accounts for over 11 million registered voters.
