Winde vows to hold those responsible for George building collapse accountable

CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Premier Alan Winde says the provincial government will leave no stone unturned in finding out exactly what led to the deadly building collapse in George.
 
Thirty-three people died when an unfinished five-storey apartment block caved in almost two weeks ago.

Winde said 62 construction workers were on site when the building collapsed and not 81, as previously assumed.
 
The labour department, police and an independent structural engineering firm appointed by the provincial government are probing the cause of the tragedy.
 
Winde said this had been a very difficult time for all involved.

"But through it all, our disaster management workers and volunteers persevered with the sole aim of saving as many lives as possible.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the 33 victims. We all share your pain, and we will do everything we can to hold those responsible for this tragedy accountable."
