NATJOINTS welcomes arrest of duo linked to Mthatha election unrest

CAPE TOWN - The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) has welcomed the arrest of two men linked to the unrest that disrupted special voting in the Eastern Cape this week.

The duo have already appeared in court and are out on bail of R3,000.

Protests by taxi operators led to the looting of trucks and blocking of roads in Mthatha on Monday.

Fifty-two-year-old Mthuthuzeli Sogoni and 47-year-old Cebenkosi Sikrenya were arrested for allegedly circulating a voice note and video inciting violence and mobilising people not to vote.

National police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, said that the pair are due to appear in court next month.

"The inflammatory messages shared by the pair were spread widely on various social media platforms. The NATJOINTS has repeatedly warned social media users to refrain from posting and sharing inflammatory messages that could cause harm, mobilise communities to incite violence and engage in criminal acts."
