KZN police commissioner vows to act against officers in viral assault video

JOHANNESBURG - KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said he would act against officers who appeared in video footage assaulting a person in oThongathi.
The video went viral on social media, showing KZN South African Police Service (SAPS) officials attacking a man lying on the floor in what appears to be an unprovoked act on Sunday.
Mkhwanazi has reminded police officers to be mindful of their duty and code of conduct and strive to act within the limits of the law at all times.

"Communities must be and feel safe in the presence of police officers and not be fearful of the very same officers who are supposed to be their source of refuge. Police can only retaliate with a proportional, minimum force if they find themselves under any form of attack," said KZN Police Spokesperson, Robert Netshiunda.
