The Flower Hall Test and Examination Centre at Wits University's Campus West has been shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in the Creative Reuse category.
"It's always been used as a test and examination centre but I think most people who attended Wits will remember it as a very cold, uncomfortable and horrible space."
- Dr Heather Dodd, Savage + Dodd Architects
Dodd says this building dates back to 1969 where it was originally built as a flower hall at the old Rand Easter Show.
She adds that Wits inherited the building when they took over the showgrounds as part of their west campus.
"We essentially built a new building within it and then upgraded its services...it is completely refurbished and revitalised as something completely new."

According to a press release by the university, the renovation features energy-efficient systems like lighting, HVAC, and a chilled beam system, creating a modern and functional space, while preserving its historical significance.
"The building's original use is quite different from what it is being used for now and hopefully in the future we'll adapt it again. Wits' long-term vision is to be able to convert the building once again into engineering research laboratories. So what we're really doing is putting in all the preconditions and all the necessary services that would allow flexibility for change in the future."

The Flower Hall project will be presented at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore from 6 to 8 November 2024 by the creators of the innovative space, Savage + Dodd Architects.
