Tebogo Mabye hangs up MasterChef apron: ‘Things went south quickly’

The latest episode of MasterChef SA saw contestants being challenged to make something incredible out of the simple potato.
As an added challenge, they had to make use of an air fryer.

Mabye failed to impress the judges with his loaded mash with potato skins, egg, anchovy duck fat, and had to hang up his apron.
“When I saw the air fryer I knew this would be a challenge… It went south quite quickly.”

He says it was always a dream of his to be on MasterChef and jumped to apply when applications opened.
Growing up in difficult circumstances, he did not always have access to food, which has shaped the way her works with it.
“It gave me a chance to honour food and give it the integrity it deserves.”

Although his MasterChef journey is over, he says he still dreams of opening his own restaurant.
“I am hoping as time goes on I will still be able to open my restaurant. It is still in the pipeline.”
