CAPE TOWN - A juvenile humpback whale has been rescued after being entangled in fishing rope offshore near Millers Point earlier in the week.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and Whale Disentanglement Network volunteers assisted the calf after being alerted by a local whale watcher on Wednesday.
NSRI Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said that upon arrival at Millers Point, they found the whale wrapped in fishing rope and anchored to the seabed.
"Once all of the rope was freed, the whale began swimming around freely and showing confidence and strength. The whale then approached the fishing vessel, and it did appear that the young whale was showing its appreciation."
