KWAZULU NATAL - KwaZulu Natal police have launched a manhunt for suspected cash-in-transit robbers who escaped during an integrated intelligence-led operation at New Glasgow in Verulam.

On Friday, during the operation, the police pulled over two vehicles. One sped off and another stopped just as one of the passengers started shooting at police.

A shoot-out ensued and two suspected cash-in-transit robbers died, including a 55-year-old, who was on the police’s most wanted list and had been linked to at least 23 cases of cash-in-transit heists.

The police’s Robert Netshiunda said: "The suspects were found in possession of two firearms, a pistol and a rifle. Preliminary investigations have confirmed that the rifle was stolen during a cash-in-transit robbery that happened in Verulam in August 2024. The pistol, whose serial number was erased, was found to be a police officer-issued firearm."
