It's important to take an honest look at your current fitness level, habits, and lifestyle before setting any expectations.

Sara-Jayne Makwala King spoke to Body Technician and advanced training/nutrition specialist, Bruce Benjamin.

Listen to their conversation in the audio clip below.

Have you set fitness and weight loss goals for the new year?

Being realistic is considered key to making lasting progress.

Benjamin says your first step to achieving your goals should involve self-reflection.

He explains that it's important to take an honest look at your current fitness level, habits, and lifestyle before setting any expectations.

"People have these fantastic goals in mind, not that they are not obtainable, but they are very gun-ho to get those off the mark; you really have to look at what you're able to do at that point in time in your life, make an assessment and go in easy."
- Bruce Benjamin, Body Technician and advanced training/nutrition specialist

According to Benjamin, one of the most common mistakes people make when starting their fitness journeys or recommitting to their goals is diving in too aggressively.

Pushing too hard at the start can result in burnout, injury, and feelings of discouragement.

"The biggest mistake that I have seen people make is hitting the ceiling too hard too fast right in the beginning."
- Bruce Benjamin, Body Technician and advanced training/nutrition specialist
