CAPE TOWN - Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says Africa has a pivotal role to play in the Just Energy Transition.
Building on Brazil's G20 priorities, Ramokgopa said South Africa wants its presidency to produce a comprehensive blueprint for action on fair and affordable transitions.

Addressing the first G20 energy transitions working group on Thursday in a virtual discussion, Ramokgopa laid out the goals for this year's work.
He said while energy policy is inherently political, the world is at a significant turning point given current geo-political tensions.
Ramokgopa said while this situation presents new complexities in the transition to cleaner forms of energy, it also presents opportunities.

"At a time when global energy dynamics require thoughtful consideration of both national priorities and international commitments. Our discussions must acknowledge the sovereign right of nations to utilise their natural resources according to their unique developmental contexts."
Ramokgopa said the G20 energy stream will also be expected to develop a comprehensive energy framework that will ensure the diversification of energy sources, including renewable energy, nuclear and natural gas.
