DURBAN - Three suspected robbers have been killed in a shootout with the police in the Reservoir Hills area, north of Durban, on Friday afternoon.

It's believed they were on their way to commit a crime when police intercepted them.

Two officers were injured during this incident.

Police cordoned off the crime scene where three suspected robbers were killed by police.

They said the suspects were travelling in three vehicles when they intercepted them.

Two cars fled the scene while one with three men opted for a gunfight.

Police spokesperson, Jay Naicker: "There was a shootout between the suspects and the police officers. All three suspects were fatally wounded. At this stage, we can see that there’s two firearms and a grenade in the vehicle. Currently, we are waiting for the explosives unit to defuse that grenade."

Naicker said that Hawks investigators had revealed that the three were also wanted for various other crimes.
