JOHANNESBURG – Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen has used his visit to the White House to play politics.

He told Trump that his primary goal is to keep the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) far away from the Union Buildings.

Steenhuisen, in his capacity as agriculture minister, was part of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s delegation that met Trump on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Trump showed video footage of Julius Malema chanting the controversial “kill the boer” slogan.

This was part of his efforts to support his unfounded claim that Afrikaner farmers are being killed.

Although Steenhuisen refuted Trump’s assertions of a white genocide, he still took the moment to wave the DA flag.

“The reason that my part, the DA, which has been in opposition for over 30 years, chose to join hands with Mr Ramaphosa’s party was precisely to keep those people out of power. We cannot have those people sitting in the Union Buildings and making decisions.”

Steenhuisen also told Trump that South Africa needs help.

“That is why this government needs the support of our allies from the world to strengthen and grow our economy and shut the door forever on that rebel getting through the doors of the Union Buildings.”
