Hanover Park children living in fear after rape of 9-year-old, says resident

The 51-year-old man accused of raping the child made a brief appearance in court before the matter was postponed for further investigation.

CAPE TOWN - A Hanover Park resident said that children in the community were living in fear after a nine-year-old girl was raped in the area.

A convicted rapist who was arrested for the incident last week, made his second appearance in court.

The 51-year-old is charged with human trafficking, rape, sexual assault and abduction. 

A group of mothers from Hanover Park gathered outside the Wynberg Magistrates Court on Friday to make their voices heard.

They were there to support a nine-year-old girl who was raped in the area on Tuesday last week.

The man accused of raping the child made a brief appearance in court before the matter was postponed for further investigation.

One of the mothers, Jenny Edwards, said that children in Hanover Park were living in fear.

"We are concerned about our children who are living in fear. Our children don't even want to go to school. Our children are afraid of what is happening around them." 

The mothers said they would be back at court on 25 July when the matter is set to resume.
