CAPE TOWN - The National Coloured Congress (NCC) has tabled a motion of no confidence in Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis during a special council sitting on Wednesday.
NCC councillor Anastacia Davids listed several reasons for the call to remove Hill-Lewis as the city's number one citizen.
She accused the mayor of lacking transparency, spreading false statements about NCC president, Fadiel Adams, and lying about meeting with the provincial police commissioner to discuss alleged corruption within the municipality.
Davids also accused the mayor of using the podium to insult councillors.
"The mayor’s actions reflect a consistent pattern of dishonesty, abuse of power, lack of professionalism and failure to fulfil the responsibilities expected of the city's highest office.
"He does not embody the principles of a City of Hope and damaged public trust. If the mayor has nothing to fear and believes that his leadership and his party, he should have no objections to this motion being decided through a secret ballot."
However, Hill-Lewis said the motion had no merit and dismissed it as mere political point-scoring.
"I'm afraid this is precisely what the NCC's motion has done here today. In their attempt to list seven smoking guns in their motion application, all that Fadiel Adams' handlangers have achieved here today is to demonstrate just how empty, pathetic, dishonest, and just plain amateurish their case actually is."
