CAPE TOWN - On the eve of World No Tobacco Day, experts are once again warning people of the dangers of smoking.
According to the National Council Against Smoking, 880,000 non-smokers die every year from exposure to second-hand smoke globally.
Leading pulmonologist at the University of Cape Town, Professor Richard Van Zyl, said that tobacco could also cause skin wrinkles, pimples, oral, mouth and lung cancer.
"Tobacco cigarettes have been around for a very long time, so the tobacco rolling machine was produced in like early 1900s, so we’ve had well over a hundred years' worth of research around tobacco cigarettes, so we know them much better."
He added that research on newer smoking choices were not as extensive yet.
"Vaping has been around for some time now. There is lots of research around vaping and its potential harm. What there isn't is long term, so 20- or 30-year data on people who vape. Like we know what happens if you smoke for 20 or 30 years, so we don't have that for vaping yet."
