Long-running Senzo Meyiwa murder trial expected to resume in court

JOHANNESBURG - The long-running Senzo Meyiwa murder trial is expected to resume at the Pretoria High Court on Monday morning.
Proceedings in the matter paused briefly last week after, adding to frustrations about the continued delays.
The latest delay followed a request by State prosecutor Advocate George Baloyi for additional time to gather critical information for the defence regarding the automatic vehicle location (AVL) data of vehicles used during the arrest of the accused.
When proceedings resumed in May following a long pause, Mnisi asked for more data from the tracking devices installed in some of the police cars that were used to transport the first accused, Muzi Sibiya.
Sibiya was arrested in 2020 and is now among five men being tried for the Bafana Bafana captain’s 2014 murder.
Earlier in the trial, Sibiya’s defence had argued that officers transporting him had made an unsanctioned stop where he was allegedly assaulted to force a confession from him about his involvement in Meyiwa’s death.
The car data is expected to be central to this claim.
