JOHANNESBURG - Three former KwaZulu-Natal police officers have been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each for soliciting a bribe to quash a taxi violence investigation.
Madoda Mhlongo, Siyabonga Mabhida and Nstikelelo Shezi were sentenced on Friday at the durban specialised commercial crimes court for contravening the Prevention of Combatting Corrupt Activities Act.
The former officers were attached to the SAPS’ Taxi Violence Unit, where they were tasked with investigating criminal activities in the Kwandengezi Zwelibomvu Taxi Association.
The three officers solicited a R200,000 bribe from the suspects and were caught, accepting the money, in a police sting operation.
KZN National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said, "The NPA welcomes this successful prosecution, made possible by the combined efforts of the prosecution and the investigating team. Curbing corruption is one of the priorities of the NPA, and corruption, especially involving public officials, will not be tolerated. We hope that this sentence will serve as a deterrent to other officials who work in the public sector.”
