CAPE TOWN - The African National Congress (ANC) says the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) continues to undermine national policy.

The former ruling party's concerns follow a report by the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) highlighting the department's failure to meet certain national objectives.

The provincial Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) met on Friday to discuss the department's performance in the previous financial year.

ANC member of Parliament Nomi Nkondlo said the department failed to meet national objectives for the national reading plan for primary schools and lesson plans for home language literacy for grades one to three.

The Western Cape's Education MEC, David Maynier, stated that the national Department of Basic Education (DBE) failed to provide indicators for those performance items.

"We are currently working together with the DBE and other stakeholders to improve the technical performance indicators," said Maynier.

Nkondlo added that Scopa will be monitoring the department to make sure it meets national objectives in the new financial year.
