CAPE TOWN - Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said he's ready to stand for a second mayoral term in the city.

Hill-Lewis has not, however, ruled out also gunning for the DA's top job should current leader, John Steenhuisen, decide not to run for a third term.

The Cape Town mayor joined Steenhuisen in Hanover Park on Tuesday to celebrate the party's 25th anniversary.

Speaking to EWN on the sidelines, Hill-Lewis indicated that he was ready to apply to be the party's mayoral candidate in next year's election.

"The nominations have opened for all of the other cities. They've started with the municipalities where the DA does not govern. So, Cape Town will be in the next phase and so I haven't applied but that's not because I don't want to, it's because it hasn't opened yet."

But Hill-Lewis is still applying loyalty over ambition when it comes to vying to lead his party.

"So long as John wants to run again, I will absolutely support him. I think he's done a great job as leader. If there is a vacancy in the job and John decides not to, then I will seriously consider my options."

Steenhuisen said he was still deciding whether to put his hand up again when the party goes to its electoral conference next April.
