CAPE TOWN - It's been more than 48 hours since a 9-day old baby was abducted in at Middestad Mall in Bellville.
Police are asking for anyone with information to come forward to assist with the investigation.
The mother of the infant said that she was approached by a woman claiming to be part of the Zoe Project, a maternity organisation which helps new mothers.
She said that she became sick and asked the woman to look after the baby while she used the bathroom.
But when she returned the woman and her baby was gone.
CEO of the Zoe Project Tracey Aitken said they are in no way associated with the woman who allegedly kidnapped the baby.
"We’ve been going for the last 25 years, and we’ve been working within government maternity units and hospitals for 25 years that already gives us a credibility," said Aitken.
Aitken explains how they verify their staff.
"All our volunteers are interviewed, they have police clearance, they get training under coaches so there's a whole hierarchy of myself and under me we’ve got coaches that train and put hours in and after they've done their 25 hours of training, they also gain another interview and once that has happened, they get their scrubs," Aitken.
