CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape anti-gang unit has launched a manhunt after five people were killed and seven injured in Mitchells Plain.
Police said that several shooting incidents occurred at different locations in the area on Thursday.
Reports from the scene indicate that at approximately 12:30, gunmen fired shots at a tuck shop in Beacon Valley, leaving two people dead and three injured.
In two other incidents in Beacon Valley on Thursday afternoon, another person was shot dead and four others injured.
Then in two other incidents in Tafelsig and Portlands at Town Centre, two people were shot dead respectively.
City Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, said that metro police were assisting the police in the area.
"We have availed nearly 60 members from LEAP, the metro police tactical response unit and the traffic services' roadblock unit. Our operational management are working closely with SAPS on this matter and we will avail any other resources where needed so that calm may be restored."
