JOHANNESBURG - E-hailers in Gauteng have been urged to apply for permits to ensure that they are compliant with the National Land Transport Act.
The call was made at a media briefing with the Gauteng E-Hailing Services (GES) and South African meter taxis, addressing regulation and safety concerns in the industry.
Over the past few weeks, some e-hailers have taken to the streets over several concerns, one being about working conditions as well as the slashing of fair prices.
GES chairman Thato Ramaila has explained that formalisation of the sector is important.
“Without formal structures, e-hailing operators remain vulnerable always. Number one, one of the challenges that we have as e-hailing operators is the vehicle impoundment and illegal exploitation. You find yourself operating, and your vehicle will be impounded.”
