Suspect killed, 2 others injured in shootout with KZN police

DURBAN - A suspect was shot dead and two others injured during a shootout with police in Kwadabeka, west of Durban.

Four suspects were being pursued in connection with the attempted murder of two police officers earlier this week in Bester, north of the city.

Police investigations on Wednesday led officers to the KK hostel, where the four were hiding.

Spokesperson Colonel Netshiunda said police came under fire when they approached the wanted suspects.

"When police approached the room in which the suspects were hiding, the suspects started firing shots towards police officers, and a shootout ensued. One suspect was shot and fatally wounded during the shootout. Three suspects escaped through the windows; however, two of them were found outside with gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital under police guard."

He said firearms and ammunition were recovered.

"The suspects, who are also linked to another murder in Inanda, were found in possession of a firearm and 93 rounds of ammunition. Further police investigations led to the recovery of three more firearms."

Police said the injured suspects would appear in court when they were fit to do so.

No police officer was injured during the shootout.

Meanwhile, a search for more suspects is underway.
