CAPE TOWN - Cape Town’s community services and health directorate says it’s committed to reuniting some of the city’s homeless people with their families.
The city's "Rough sleeper strategy" has provided support to 5,000 homeless people from July 2024 to June 2025.
The city’s safe spaces helps with obtaining IDs, social grants, substance abuse treatment and developing skills for work opportunities.
MMC for services and health, councillor Francine Higham, said that over 600 people participated in development programmes at their city-run safe spaces.
"The core objective of the city's street people programme is to reduce the number of people sleeping rough in the city by providing sustainable pathways off the street. The programme focuses on building resilience and restoring dignity by offering safe and transitional accommodation through our safe spaces and supported shelters in our partner network."
