JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg said its teams were installing ventilation systems at the damaged Lilian Ngoyi Street in the CBD to prevent another gas explosion.

Repairs to the road are almost complete, with the metro confirming that 86% of the work has been done.

A portion of the bustling street was damaged by a massive underground explosion two years ago.

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) CEO Zweli Nyathi said the ventilation systems that were being installed would protect the street against any future gas-related incidents.

"Despite adverse weather conditions earlier in the year, the contractor at the Lilian Ngoyi site has demonstrated exceptional performance, maintaining project timelines through a revised and accelerated exception programme."
