CAPE TOWN - Organisers of the Cycle for Change spinathon are calling on Capetonians to support their fundraising initiative at the V&A Waterfront this weekend.
The money raised will be donated to the Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy in Khayelitsha and Songezo Cycling Academy in Masiphumelele.
These cycle academies offer safe spaces for young people to escape the negative pressures faced in their communities.
Managing director of Johnson HealthTech South Africa, Zeyd Sulaiman, said the spinathon isn’t only for athletes but for anyone who wanted to make a difference.
"We've got a morning session that will kick off with registration from 8 a.m., where people will then jump in a relay format onto those bikes and cycle for approximately two hours."
Suleiman added that cycling was more than just about fitness and health.
"The purpose of this academy is to attract young people who are looking for more opportunities, either after school, a safe place that they can come in and do their homework, get additional tuition, have access to computers that will help them, obviously, improve their academic achievements, as well as then be able to join the Songezo Cycling Academy."
