JOHANNESBURG - The Higher Education Department, National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and institutions of higher learning will form a new collective to deal with student matters in 2026.

The group includes student leaders who will meet weekly and reflect on solutions that have been implemented to date.

Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela announced the formation of the group at a media briefing in Pretoria on Monday, addressing readiness for the 2026 academic year.

He said he wanted the group to anticipate challenges timeously to prevent protest action.

"Yes, students have the right to strike, university leaders have the right to protect campus property but we must establish proper resolution structures on campus before we even get the police or the department."
