CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku has reiterated his call for rival taxi associations CATA and CODETA to speedily resolve their dispute which has claimed several lives.

The Cape's biggest taxi associations are clashing over routes from Mfuleni and Khayelitsha to Somerset West.

A 30-day shutdown of this corridor was implemented by the provincial government to restore stability and prevent further violence.

Sileku says he's pleased that the first few days of the extraordinary measures have proceeded without incident.

"This difficult decision was only taken to protect the lives of our commuters and residents, as well as bring about stability on those routes. While the measures remain in place, our top priority is to safeguard residents and ensure that they can travel with dignity and security. We remain open to dialogue with both CATA and CODETA and sincerely hope that we can soon reach a sustainable resolution for lasting peace in the industry.” Sileku said.
