National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola said the responsibilities of the police minister need to be clearly defined.
Masemola argued that suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu had no authority to instruct him to disband the political killings task team.
He made these remarks during his testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry sitting in Pretoria on Tuesday.
Delivering his closing remarks, the top cop emphasised the need for reforms in the police service.
"I have been asked about the key reforms that would assist within the South African Police Service. Although I intend to make comprehensive submissions in this regard at a later stage, I would like to highlight that the police minister’s role needs to be urgently defined – especially there being a minister on leave and an acting minister of police."
