The Anglican Bishops of Southern Africa have reiterated their call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza as 157 of the 193 member states of the United Nations recognise Palestine as a sovereign state.

This is amid the escalation of attacks on Palestinians in Gaza, which has claimed the lives of more than 64,000 Palestinians.

The Gaza conflict was sparked by a Hamas attack in Israel on October 7, 2023, at least 1200 Israeli citizens were killed.

Israel's relentless attacks have continued in Gaza despite calls for a truce from world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly.

The Anglican Bishops of Southern Africa said the recent breakdown of ceasefire agreements and the continued bombardments in the region have further endangered civilians, particularly women and children.

They said international reports confirm that the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza has deepened, with over 90% of the population displaced, and the health system near total collapse.

In a statement, the church's Synod of Bishops said the escalation of the conflict in the region raises the real threat of a wider war and has divided the international community.

They're calling for unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, accountability for violations of international law, the release of all hostages and political prisoners, and renewed commitment to peacebuilding.
