Parly committee probing police corruption clashes over whether Ramaphosa should give testimony

Members of Parliament's ad hoc committee probing police corruption have clashed over names added to the committee's witness list and whether President Cyril Ramaphosa should give testimony.

The committee met on Friday to decide which names should be added to its witness list in preparation for hearings that start in October.

Members of the committee are also concerned they won't have enough time to go through the list of more than 20 additional witnesses, as they start their investigation into allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

The ad hoc committee met for the second time on Friday to consider proposals on which witnesses should be added to the list.

Parties like the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) submitted a lengthy list of 20 names, including President Cyril Ramaphosa and Minister Gayton McKenzie.

Malema also called on Government of National Unity (GNU) members to not prevent Ramaphosa from being a witness.

"Why is Parliament being used to shield the president from accountability. We are now failing again in our responsibility to hold the executive accountable."

Committee member Ashley Sauls said that Parliament should not base its witnesses from Madlanga Commission evidence.

"Our position is we are not a subcommittee of the commission. So, we will for ourselves hear testimony first then make a decision."

The committee resolved to wait for Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's testimony in October before adjusting its witness list.
