Police are hunting the gunman who shot and wounded a three-year-old child in Mitchells Plain.

The shooting happened in Beacon Valley, in the early hours of Friday morning.

The boy sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was rushed to hospital for medical care.

The police's Wesley Twigg said the child was sleeping inside a Wendy house when gunshots rang out outside.

"The father discovered that his son was wounded in his left leg after a bullet penetrated the wood. The victim was taken to a medical facility for treatment. The suspect/s fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.
