The mortal remains of late South African ambassador to France Nathi Mthethwa arrived in his home province, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday afternoon.

The politician died in Paris last week.

His body will be received by family, former colleagues and friends gathered at the King Shaka International Airport.

A short service is planned to take place at the airport before a memorial service by the African National Congress later today (Friday).

Mthethwa, who has been described as a dedicated public servant, will be laid to rest on Sunday in KwaMbonambi, north of the province.

The former colleagues of Mthethwa, including former ministers, have gathered at the airport to welcome his remains.

During Mthethwa’s term as the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele was the National Police Commissioner.

Cele said a lot was achieved for the service during Mthethwa’s tenure, including the formation of teams like the Tactical Response Team.

“Quite several teams were formed that was one of them TRT (Amabharethe). The other team that was formed was the tracking team in Gauteng, whose responsibility was to track all the people who were wanted by the detectives so that they could face the law.”

He has also praised Mthethwa for his life of public service.

Later, Mthethwa’s body will be taken to Empangeni, in northern KZN.
