KWAMBONAMBI - KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has urged both the African National Congress (ANC) and his party the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) to honour the late Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa’s legacy of political tolerance.

Mthethwa was laid to rest at his homestead in northern KZN on Sunday, following his passing in Paris almost two weeks ago.

South Africa's ambassador to France was given a special official funeral, category 2.

Among other contributions, Mthethwa was hailed for his role in forging peace among political parties.

KZN has historically been a tough political terrain, often being the battleground for the ANC and IFP.

The political violence and intolerance in KwaZulu-Natal has for years cost politicians and traditional leaders their lives.

During the funeral of the late Nathi Mthethwa, many mourners described him as important for creating a better political environment in the province he hails from.

Ntuli, who is also the provincial chairperson of the IFP, had this to say when bidding farewell to Mthethwa.

"I hope the message you are leaving, in particular between the IFP and the ANC in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, which was also in fact championed by the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, for closing the chapter of the past wounds, reconciliation will be reactivated so that we close the chapter of the past wounds."

Ntuli has called on the political fraternity to continue to carry the torch of development and unity.
