Education quality assurance body Umalusi said it was satisfied that the appointment of markers across all four assessment bodies is progressing accordingly.

This follows a shortage of markers reported for certain subjects, particularly in the Basic Education Department for History and Paper 3 home and first additional languages.

Umalusi said that while some bodies, including the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) and Higher Education and Training departments, were still finalising their appointments, it would continue to audit the process to ensure it meets required standards.

Senior manager Mary-Antoinette Dliwayo said strategies, such as additional recruitment, an early start to marking and extending the marking period, would address gaps before marking begins.

"All markers appointed across the four assessment bodies will be trained prior to the commencement of the marking. The marking process will unfold in a staggered manner, commencing on the 15th of November and ending on 18 December 2025. Umalusi will monitor the implementation of a staggered marking approach to ensure that the process is not compromised."
