A couple who live in Capri near Ocean View said they took precautionary action to evacuate their children and pets when a roaring fire started encroaching on their property.

Firefighters largely contained the wildfire that raged across the Roodeberg mountain range in the Jonkersdam area of Table Mountain National Park on Thursday night.

A spotter plane and a waterbombing chopper were deployed to douse any flare-ups on Friday.

Married couple Aiden and Nina Bunnie said the fire came quite close to their thatch-roofed house in Capri last night.

"A lot of stress... We have two young children, and so we decided for my wife and our kids to evacuate."

Nina said one of their dogs insisted on staying behind.

"When we actually evacuated, me and the two children and one of our dogs... The other one - a very loyal dog - he just stayed with Aiden while he was spraying the house."

The couple thanked firefighters for working throughout the night to contain the blaze and prevent any damage to property.
