Evidence leader Norman Arendse told Mchunu that he thought it was bizarre how his directive on New Year’s Eve 2024 landed with Matlala and Mogotsi less than a day later.

Arendse referred to WhatsApp messages where Mogotsi and Matlala confirm the disbandment of the task team.

But Mchunu distanced himself from the messages and referred the committee to Matlala and Mogotsi.

“I never spoke to Brown Mogotsi in this period, particularly about the disbandment. How he got access to letter it is better explained by him.”

Mchunu said he has no links to any syndicates.

“I want [to pursue] criminal syndicates. I want them, but not that want I wanted to protect them.”

Mchunu said he believes very strongly that the Constitution allowed him, as the minister, to take the decision to disband the task team.

Mchunu's evidence continues on Friday.
