The Western Cape police ombudsman says investigations are still underway to determine whether gangs infiltrated the province's top cops.

Police Ombudsman Major-General Oswald Reddy released a redacted report on Thursday after the Western Cape government lodged a complaint related to alleged police infiltration by gangs in October 2022.

The allegations stem from a ruling by Judge Daniel Thulare during a high court trial, which referenced possible infiltration of police management in the province by the 28s gang.

Reddy said that both the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and Parliament were still investigating the matter.

"I am aware that they are currently conducting an investigation into the criminal aspects."

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said that he's been waiting for an update from IPID for more than a year.

"It took a year before the IPID team even put their investigation plan together and then they said we'll come back in another year and that's already passed, but we have written to them to say give us the update on where you are with this investigation."

Parliament's portfolio committee on police on oversight is also busy with its own probe into the allegations.
