Chaos erupted in Mitchells Plain during a shootout between police and armed suspects.
 
National Intervention Unit members followed up on information about armed suspects travelling in a Toyota Hilux on Wednesday morning.
 
The vehicle was followed from Nyanga and when the suspects spotted the police vehicle on Jakes Gerwel Drive, in Mitchell's Plain, they opened fire.
 
The police's Wesley Twigg said the officers returned fire, killing one man.
 
Four others were arrested.

"An AK-47 rifle and two 9mm pistols with ammunition were recovered on the scene. Two private vehicles were damaged when the suspects' vehicle collided with the vehicles. The circumstances surrounding the death of one of the suspects is under investigation by IPID."
