Two City of Cape Town law enforcement officers are expected to appear in the Cape Town Regional Court on Wednesday on charges of corruption, extortion and business robbery.

The officers, attached to the metal theft unit, were nabbed on Tuesday morning.

It's understood that during the incidents, which date back to January, the officers allegedly extorted money from spaza shop owners.

The Hawks said that it's believed that the arrested law enforcement officers were targeting foreign national spaza shop owners, requesting asylum documentation.

With or without the documents, the officers would still allegedly demand money and, on different occasions, the victims paid amounts of R5,000 and R6,000.

The suspects were reportedly previously arrested in May on similar charges and were released on bail.

City of Cape Town law enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason said the matter is being dealt with in terms of city policies and processes, and the suspects will be suspended as the disciplinary process is underway.
