Cricket South Africa (CSA) recently announced a partnership between the Proteas Men and global anime streaming service Crunchyroll for the current India series.

The Crunchyroll logo is prominently featured on the back of the players' jerseys across all formats (Test, one-day international (ODI) and T20 International) until 19 December.

Speaking to CapeTalk’s Lester Kiewit, Brett Wilson of AnimeFanatika says Crunchyroll has significantly expanded into global sports.

Anime has also gained great popularity in South Africa and India.

“It was with a big surprise that everyone saw that Crunchyroll had sponsored the Proteas. This means that they are actually trying to get more people by way of the sport.

“With the logo on the Proteas [jersey], you have got more eyeballs out there. You will be getting to a demographic that hardly ever will go and watch anime,” he adds.

In a statement, CSA says anime has a global presence with over a billion viewers.

“We see this partnership as a celebration of shared values and a drive to connect with global audiences.”
