The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng believes the recent mass shooting in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria, is further proof that the South African Police Service (SAPS) is struggling to contain crime.

Twelve people were killed, and many others were wounded when three gunmen stormed into a tavern at the Saulsville Hostel and opened fire. A total of 25 people were shot, with survivors still fighting for their lives in the hospital.

The DA's Gauteng spokesperson for Community Safety, Crezane Bosch, said police need to step up their efforts.

Bosch further argued that the current approach is inadequate and lacks the necessary focus to curb the rising crime rate effectively.

"I do not believe that there is sufficient improvement when it comes to crime in the area. One of the greatest concerns is that they do not use data to try and identify where the crime hotspot is and address it. They just allocate wardens without using data-driven evidence when making decisions to address crime."
